On This Day...9th October

9 October 2018

The first recorded game on 9th October took place in 1886 and a friendly fixture with Everton at Anfield.

Everton played their games at Anfield until 1892, when they left for their new ground at Goodison Park. The Stadium owners at the time attempted to take their name to form a new club but were blocked by the FA, so they started their new club and called them Liverpool – and the rest is history. The game with Bury ended with a 4-1 victory for the Toffees with the Bury goal scored by an unknown Shaker.

A 1911 Lancashire Cup 2nd Round game with Manchester City brought success with a 4-0 victory thanks to goals from Bob Currie (2), Tom Kay and Billy Hibbert with just 1,174 supporters on the gate.

West Ham United provided the opposition for a Division One game, at Upton Park, in 1926. With 20,000 supporters on the gate, the Shakers ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from John Ball and Cyril Matthews.

Bury made the short trip to Doncaster Rovers on this day in 1958 for a Division Three game, and with only 4,000 supporters watching, came home with both points following a 1-0 victory thanks to a John Parker penalty.

A longer away game came in 1965 when the Shakers travelled to Ipswich Town. 12,053 supporters watched as the Shakers scored the odd goal in seven with a 4-3 victory thanks to goals from Ray Parry, Jack Maltby, Bill Griffin and a Ray Pointer penalty.

Scunthorpe United arrived at Gigg Lane in 1971 for a Division Four game with the Shakers, where 2,733 supporters watched as goals from Tom White and a brace from future England player Terry McDermott secured the win.

1974 brought League Cup action to Gigg Lane and a visit from high-flying Leeds United. Brian Williams scored the only Bury goal of the game as Leeds claimed a 2-1 win with 16,354 supporters on the gate.

Wigan Athletic came to Bury in 1993 for a Division Three game in 1993 and with 2,729 supporters watching, goals from Tony Kelly, Ronnie Mauge and Tony Rigby claimed a good 3-0 victory for the Shakers.

2007 saw the Shakers visit Rochdale's Spotland for the second time in a week. A 2-1 win in the League was quickly followed by a 3-1 victory in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to a brace of goals from Glynn Hurst and a strike from Domaine Rouse.

The full Bury side that evening was as follows: -

Jim Provett, Steve Haslam, David Buchanan, Dave Challinor, Andy Parrish, Ricky Anane (Paul Scott), Brian Barry-Murphy, Richie Baker, Nicky Adams, James Dean (Domaine Rouse), Glynn Hurst (See main image at the top of the page) (Jack Dorney) – Subs not used: Cameron Belford, Ashley Young

The last recorded game on this day took place in the 2012/13 season when Rochdale were the opposition in a Johnstones Paint Trophy Second Round tie at Spotland. The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes thanks to a Steven Schumacher equaliser. The game went to penalties and brought success to the Shakers with five penalties converted against Rochdale's 4.
