On This Day...10th September
Of the 30 games played on 10th September over the club's long history, the following games stand out for varying reasons...
The first recorded game was in the 1887/88 season. As a recently formed club, this was only our third season and the entire fixture list was made up of friendly games. Bury were at home to Astley Bridge and goals from Parkinson and Richardson secured a 2-2 draw.
By the time the 1892 season started, Bury were now playing in the Lancashire League and a home game with West Manchester brought a cracking result for the fledgling Shakers. Goals from Wilkinson (2), Bourne (2), Plant and Scrimmage secured a 6-2 win in front of 3,230 supporters.
In 1901, Bury played Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for Jack Pray. Pray joined the Shakers from Falkirk in the closed season and for the next six seasons he hardly missed a match. He was the club's captain when we won the FA Cup in 1900, beating Southampton 4-0. He left Bury in September 1902, returning to Scotland before emigrating to Canada.
The game with Bolton finished 5-1 with goals from Gray 2, Monks, Plant and Wood. Sadly only 172 supporters attended the game, leaving little return for Jack Pray.
Bristol City were the visitors to Gigg Lane in 1930 for a Second Division game and left empty-handed for their long trip back to the West Country after a 6-0 mauling with goals from John Smith (2), Vernon (2), Wally Amos and Dave Robbie. 8,844 supporters attended the game.
Arguably the club's best season, 1960/61 brought a championship game to Gigg Lane. Swindon Town were the visitors to Bury and suffered, as most did that season, a defeat as goals from Don Watson, Allan Jackson and Bill Calder recorded a fine 3-0 win with 6,749 supporters on the gate.
Another successful season was the 1994/95 season. Scunthorpe United visited Gigg Lane and left with a 2-0 defeat to Bury behind them. Lenny Johnrose and Mark Carter doing the damage for the Shakers. Bury would go on to reach the Play-Off Final this season with an appearance at Wembley.
The Bury side that day was as follows: -
Lee Bracey, Michael Jackson, Roger Stanislaus, Ronnie Mauge (John Paskin), Chris Lucketti, Trevor Matthewson, Joe Mulligan, Mark Carter, Kevin Hulme (Mark Sertori), Lenny Johnrose, David Pugh
The last recorded game on this day was the 2016/17 season. It was certainly an entertaining afternoon as two goals from Danny Mayor (pictured above) (which sounds so familiar) gave the Shakers a 2-1 victory. The game could be more remembered though for red cards shown to James Vaughan and Shrewsbury's Adam El Abd.
