On This Day...13th September

Since the club was formed in 1885, we have played a total of 26 games on 13th September, with the first one taking place in 1890 in the Lancashire League. Nelson were the visitors to Gigg Lane for this game in what was the first game of a new season. The visitors found the Shakers in rampant mood as they left Bury some two hours later after suffering a 7-1 defeat; the Bury goals coming from a Cooper hat-trick, two for Chris Conway with Bourn and Fielding following up. 3,500 supporters were in attendance for this new season, which would see Bury finish the new campaign as Champions, a feat they would repeat the season after.

The first league game took place in 1902 when Grimsby Town visited Bury. The first home game of the season brought success with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from George Storey and a Jimmy Lindsay penalty, with 5,500 watching the game.

Jimmy Lindsay was a postman when not playing football. Bury's powerful north-country defender began his career at Newcastle United but had only made two league appearances when Burnley obtained his services for a £10 signing-on fee. His form at Turf Moor quickly attracted attention, and after less than a year, in which he was dubbed 'the best full-back in Division Two' he was the subject of a £400 transfer to Bury.

Lindsay retired at the close of the 1909/10 season and became a local licensee. Jimmy died in August 1925 in Audenshaw aged 66.

Said to have made immense strides in his first full season, he had all the makings of a steady and reliable back and was expected to develop further as he gained experience. In nine full seasons, he was an outstanding member of the Shakers' defence with the added bonus of 29 goals, almost all from successful penalty kick conversions. He also gained an FA Cup Winners' medal in 1903 with the Shakers.

It would be another 47-years before Bury won a game on this day, that game coming in the 1947/48 season and a visit of Fulham to Gigg Lane. Eddie Kilshaw scored the only goal of the game in front of 14,383 supporters.

A trip to Northampton Town for a Division Two game on 13th Sep 1963 brought more success for the Shakers with George Jones and Gordon Atherton scoring the two Bury goals to record a 2-1 victory.

Chesterfield were the visitors to Gigg Lane in the 1975/76 season. A third division game attracted a crowd of 4,368 supporters and most left happy following a Bury 3-1 win, thanks to goals from Derek Spence, George Hamstead and Andy Rowland. The 1975/76 squad photo is shown as the main image.

The Bury side that day was as follows: -

John Forrest, Steve Hoolickin, Keith Kennedy, Jimmy Nicholson, John Hulme, Tony Bartley, Brian Williams, Ronnie Phillips, Derek Spence, Andy Rowland, George Hamstead.

Mansfield Town arrived in Bury on 13th September 1980 for a Fourth Division encounter and suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bury. 2,668 supporters watched as goals from Craig Madden, Mick Butler, Steve Johnson and Paul Hilton secured the win.

The last recorded game on this day came in the 2014/15 season and a visit to Carlisle United's Brunton Park. 3,975 supporters were in the stands that afternoon as goals from Danny Rose, Craig Jones and Ryan Lowe secured all three points.
