On This Day...26th September
26th September for the Shakers begins in the 1891/92 season and a friendly fixture with Darwen. Although the club were based in the now three-year-old Lancashire League, Bury were one of the founding members of this league, they did play a series of friendly games throughout the season. Bury won this game 3-1 with 2,000 supporters watching the action, thanks to two goals from George Ross and a strike from Humphreys.
An 1896 First Division game at Derby County saw the Shakers slip to a 7-2 defeat. Goals from Bill Hendry and George Jack Plant; though revenge would take seven years to come for this defeat, when Derby County were put to the sword in the FA Cup Final.
In 1903, Bury – who were now FA Cup Winners - played Sunderland at Gigg Lane. With a crowd of 16,000 supporters in the fledging ground, the Shakers recorded a fine 3-1 victory with goals from Billy Wood and two from Charlie Sagar.
1914/15 season brought Nottingham Forest to Gigg Lane for a Second Division fixture. With a gate of 7,500 attending, two goals each for Bob Perry (one from a penalty) and John Lythgoe recorded a 4-1 victory.
Sheffield United came to Gigg Lane on 26th September 1925 for a First Division clash. A crowd of 10,749 supporters left with no complaints after an 11-goal thriller. Bury won the game 7-4. A Norman Bullock hat-trick, two goals from Wally Amos, a John Ball penalty and a further goal from Dave Robbie.
The Bury side that afternoon was as follows: -
Billy Richardson, Fred Heap, Tommy Adamson, James Porter, Tom Bradshaw, Bill Turner, Dave Robbie, Alec Mercer, Norman Bullock, John Ball and Wally Amos
1953 brought Doncaster Rovers to Bury for a Second Division game. 15,999 supporters watched as Bury claimed both points with goals from Walter Kelly (pictured above) and Stuart Imlach in a 2-1 victory.
On 26th September 1964, Bury travelled to Selhurst Park for a Division Two game with Crystal Palace. Ernie Yard and Bill Griffin were both on target as the Shakers claimed a 2-0 victory in front of 19,299 supporters.
Torquay United were the visitors in 1992 for a Division Three game. Two penalties settled the game with a 2-0 win for the Shakers. Liam Robinson with the first penalty and then future manager, Alan Knill, scoring the second.
The last recorded game on this date was in 2017 when Oxford United came to BL9. Chris Maguire opened the scoring from the penalty spot, followed by goals from Michael Smith and Jermaine Beckford as the Shakers claimed a rare 3-0 win in a thoroughly miserable season with relegation confirmed in April.
