On this Day for 3rd September in our history...
The first game recorded on 3rd September was way back in 1887, a friendly game with Everton away – though the result perhaps showed there was a lot of work to do with a 9-0 defeat in front of 4,000 supporters.
The 1898 season had the Shakers on the road with a game at Derby County. Only 1,000 supporters were on-hand to watch a First Division game with the Rams as the Shakers ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Charlie Sagar and Jasper McLuckie.
The 1906 season brought Woolwich Arsenal to Bury and 10,000 fans watched as Bury ran out 4-1 winners thanks to goals from Tom Kay, Amos Kilbourne, Albert Hodgkinson and Fred Bevan.
The 1932/33 season saw Millwall visiting Gigg Lane. Goals from John R Smith (2) and Billy Chalmers sent the majority of the 8,776 supporters home happy with a 3-0 victory in the Second Division.
Norwich City were the visitors on 3rd September 1963 and 10,037 supporters witnessed a thrilling game with Bury running out 4-2 winners, thanks to goals from Bill Calder, George Jones and two from Derek Mayers, including one from the penalty spot.
A 1985/96 Milk Cup First Round, second leg game brought Burnley to Bury. Burnley had won the first leg game 2-1, with Craig Madden scoring the Bury goal. This second leg game turned into a night to remember as the Shakers ran out 5-3 winners on the night to record a 6-5 victory on aggregate. Only 3,762 supporters were on-hand to see two goals from Joe Jakub, Kevin Young, Jimmy Kerr and Craig Madden earn the Shakers a second-round tie against Manchester City.
The full Bury side that evening was as follows: -
Phil Hughes, Lee Dixon, Terry Pashley, Martin Dobson, Peter Valentine, Andy Hill, Winston White, Craig Madden, Jimmy Kerr, Joe Jakub, Chris Grimshaw (David Lee)
A visit to Mansfield Town’s Field Mill in 1994 brought success for Bury and a 2-0 Third Division win. Goals from Mark Carter and John Paskin secured the three points for the Shakers.
The last recorded game on this day was in the 2016/17 season when Port Vale visited a rain-lashed Gigg Lane. Two goals from James Vaughan (pictured above) plus strikes from Hallam Hope and Jacob Mellis saw Bury win the game 4-1.
