On This Day...

Wolverhampton Wanderers provided the opposition for the first recorded game on 4 September, in a First Division game 111 years ago in 1897. Unfortunately, the game - played in Wolverhampton - brought a 3-0 defeat for the Shakers in front of 5,000 supporters.

A 1920 Division Two game at Blackpool brought the first win on this day as a single goal from Billy Ritchie saw Bury take both points with 15,000 supporters attending.

Plymouth Argyle made the long trip North in 1937, where a crowd of 11,586 were on hand to witness goals from Billy Graham and Jack Acquroff secure a 2-0 win for the Shakers.

The second highest-scoring game on this day took place in 1954 when Leeds United were the visitors to Gigg Lane. A crowd of 15,357 were thoroughly entertained as the Shakers were 5-3 victors in the Second Division. The Bury goals coming from Walter Kelly x 2, Doug Clarke, Norman Neilson and Bob McIlvenny.

Pictured below is an actual image from this game showing Bury's Cyril Law on the ball.

The full Bury side this day was as follows: -

Lew Goram, Cyril Fairclough, Eric Massey, Don May, Norman Neilson, Les Bardsley, John Simm, Bob McIlvenny, Doug Clarke, Walter Kelly and Cyril Law.

In the 1973/74 season, there was a League Cup first round, second-leg game with Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. The first game had finished 0-0 at Gigg Lane and goals from Alan Tinsley, Derek Spence and Iain Miller in the second-leg secured a 3-2 victory and progress to the second round, where Bury played Cambridge United at home.

The last recorded game on 4th September was in 2010 when Gillingham arrived at Gigg Lane. The highest scoring game of the day saw the Shakers come out on top in a nine-goal thriller, with the game finishing 5-4. Andy Bishop and current manager Ryan Lowe scored two goals each with Efe Sodje grabbing a single goal in front of 2,700 fans.
