Paul Wilkinson Get His Shakers Reign Underway With A Draw

13 July 2019

Paul Wilkinson’s Shakers tenure began with a 1-1 draw at Nantwich Town in a pre-season friendly.

There were little chances in the opening fifteen minutes but Bury saw the majority of the ball. The first real chance came after eighteen minutes. Stephen Dawson set the attack off with a brilliant ball down the right to the full-back. The resulting cross was almost met by a Bury player, but Nantwich’s ‘keeper was quick off his line to be first to the ball.

Byron Moore was the next Shaker to go close, driving into the Nantwich area. From a tight angle, he attempted a shot on goal, his powerful strike had the ‘keeper beaten, but could only find the side netting.

There was some late pressure on the Shakers goal at the end of the half, with Reed firing way over the bar from a similar angle to Moore’s earlier effort. The Shakers’ ‘keeper was never troubled by the strike.

The last chance of the half fell to Malkin. He was played in behind and looked to lob the bouncing ball beyond the ‘keeper. His effort had the goalkeeper beaten but was also over the bar.

HALF-TIME: Nantwich Town 0-0 Bury

The second period saw the Shakers almost take an early lead following a swift counter-attack. Neil Danns’ brilliant touch and smooth turn set the break off, his forward ball found a forward, who saw an effort deflected just wide of the post.

The deadlock was broken from the following corner. The ball was whipped in, and Jordan Archer was there to back-heel the ball into the back of the net three minutes into the second half.

Jordan Archer was hungry for more goals, he closed down the Nantwich ‘keeper, and was extremely close to blocking the clearance.

Danns, looking sharp after his Gold Cup exploits, tried his effort from twenty-five yards, pulling the strike just wide of the mark.

Sixty-seven minutes into the encounter, Nantwich Town had an equaliser. Mwasile broke beyond the Bury backline before slotting an effort calmly in the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, the Shakers almost had the lead again. Neil Danns received the ball in the area and powered a strike on goal. The Nantwich ‘keeper got down low to his right to prevent the Bury midfielder.
